AI Overviews and the local business: what actually changes

Google's AI answers do not need a special trick. They need the same fundamentals, done more carefully.

What Google says about appearing in AI features

Google's Search Central guide for site owners is direct about this. To be used as a supporting link in AI Overviews or AI Mode, a page needs to be indexed and eligible to show in Search with a snippet, and there are no extra technical requirements. The same foundational SEO practices apply, including making sure crawlers are not blocked by robots.txt or by a hosting or CDN setting.

Google also notes that AI Overviews only appear when its systems judge them to add something to the regular results, so they often do not show at all. That matches what we see in audits: for many local searches there is no AI Overview, and for others there is one that names only a few sources.

Why the answers skew toward clear businesses

AI features can run several related searches behind the scenes and draw on a wider set of pages than a single classic search. In practice, the businesses that get mentioned are the ones whose websites and listings state the facts plainly: what they do, where, for whom, and why they are credible. A service list trapped in an image, a service area that is never named, or contact details buried in a PDF all make that harder.

  • Write every service as text, one clear page per core service.
  • Name the cities and neighborhoods you serve on the page.
  • Keep your name, address, phone, and hours identical everywhere.
  • Answer the questions customers really ask, in their words.
  • Make sure nothing blocks Google from crawling the site.

New controls and reporting are arriving

Industry reporting in 2026 describes Search Console adding a report for generative AI performance and a control that lets sites opt out of AI features. Availability has been rolling out in stages, so check your own Search Console before planning around it. For most local businesses, being included is the goal, not opting out.

The local business version of AI readiness

Get indexed, get crawled, and get clear. Then build the outside proof that helps every kind of search: genuine reviews, consistent listings, and credible mentions. We check all of this in the free Visibility Audit, including whether an AI Overview shows for your main service in your city and whether it cites you.
